Generation No. 1

 

1.  GEORGE W.¹ GILROY was born 01 Nov 1840 in Clark Co., Ohio, and died 18 Mar 1904 in Stuart, Holt Co., Nebraska.  He married NANCY A. TUCKER 11 Nov 1867 in Greene Co., Iowa, daughter of INSKIP TUCKER and DICA PERKINS.  She was born 15 Sep 1851 in Boone Co., Indiana, and died 12 May 1932 in Greene Co., Iowa.

From Biography-

Came to Greene co. in 1855 with his family from Ohio; Parents James and Anna (Crawford) Gilroy

Feb. 10, 1862 he enlisted in the late war at Des Moines in Company H, Tenth Iowa Infantry, serving in Hamilton's division, Sullivan's brigade.  He took part in the siege of Corinth and battle of Inka, and was wounded at the second battle of Corinth Oct. 4, 1862, the ball passing through his right elbow.  He then lay in the hospital at Corinth three weeks, when he was removed to Keokuk, Iowa, remaining there until he was honorably discharged Feb. 28, 1863.  He then returned to Greene County and spent four months attending school.  After leaving school he began clerking in Isaac Tucker's store, where he served to the best interest of his employer for one year.  He then clerked in the store of J. Orr of Boonesborough, Iowa for a year.  Then came back to Jefferson and became associated with Thomas Reese, this partnership lasting two years.  He then in 1867 formed a partnership with Anderson & Toogood in the stock business, which they followed together about one year when the partnership was dissolved by mutual consent.  Mr. Gilroy then went on a prospecting tour to Kansas, but becoming dissatisfied with the country he came to Appanoose County, Iowa where he engaged in farming for two years.  He then returned to Greene County and has since followed farming on the old home place Franklin Township.  Mr. Gilroy's residence is located on section 12, Franklin Township where he has sixty-seven acres of cultivated land.  Beside his home farm he owns forty-seven aces on Section 35 of Grant Township.  He has served his township efficiently s clerk and for ten years was secretary of the School Board.  He is a Charter member of Masonic lodge at Jefferson.  In politics he cast his suffrage with the Republican party.  Mrs. Gilroy is a member of the United Brethren church.  Their post office is Cooper, Iowa

 

Notes for NANCY A. TUCKER:

Another pioneer mother and longtime resident of this county has been called to her reward.  Mrs Geo. W. Gilroy (commonly known as Mother Gilroy) died at her home Sat. night after a long illness.  Since the death of her husband in 1904, she had lived with her son, Wm. V. Gilroy, in the South part of Jefferson.  The funeral was held at Slininger's Chapel.  When she was four years of age her parents moved to Greene county, Iowa, where with the exception of about five years, when she lived Minnesota and Nebraska, she has lived continuously in this county.  This means that for over 75 years Mrs. Gilroy watched the growth and development of this part of Iowa.  She may truly be called one of our pioneer mothers.  On Nov.11, 1867, she was united in marriage to George W. Gilroy,and to them four children were born.  Wm. V. Gilroy, a well-known Jefferson citizen, Mrs. Addie Enfield living in Vermillion, Alberta, Canada, and Webster F. Gilroy and Maudie Bell Gilroy, who died a number of years ago.  She is survived by her sister Dorothy Underwood and a brother, Milt Tucker of Cheyenne, WY. 6 grand children and 13 great grand children.  She was a nurse of the early day type, learning mostly from experience, and many are the homes in Greene county where her faithful ministrations will be remembered.

2.  WILLIAM VICTOR² GILROY (GEORGE W.¹) was born 15 Jul 1871 in Appanoose Co., Iowa, and died 30 Nov 1936 in Greene Co., Iowa.  He married ZULA B. BYRNS 19 Jan 1892 in Greene co., IA.  She was born 25 Mar 1868 in Brown co., IL, and died 11 Oct 1920 in Jefferson, Greene co., IA.

 

Notes for WILLIAM VICTOR GILROY:

Herald- December 3, 1936 Obit.

Mr. Gilroy dropped dead on South Chestnut Street near the R. B. Morgan residence shortly afternoon Monday while he was walking to his home in the south part of the city after a trip down town.  Examining physician pronounced that his death was caused by heart disease.  He had been afflicted with high blood pressure for some time.

3.  ADA A.² GILROY (GEORGE W.¹) was born Abt. 1877 in Greene co., IA, and died in Vermillion, Alberta, Canada.  She married ROSS ENFIELD 20 Aug 1899.  He was born 1880 in Minnesota. His father is Joseph Enfield, b. 1856 in Illinoia, mother Sarah J., b. 1863 in Minniesota.

4.  WILLIAM GEORGE³ GILROY (WILLIAM VICTOR², GEORGE W.¹) was born 13 Oct 1898 in Grant twp., Greene co., IA, and died 24 Sep 1979 in Des Moines, IA.  He married AUDREY OLIVE SMITH 1919.  She was born 1900 in Iowa, and died 02 May 1973.

 

Notes for WILLIAM GEORGE GILROY:

Jefferson Herald 27 Sept 1979-He grew to manhood in Jefferson and attended the local high school.  He entered the Army in 1917 during World War One and served in France.  In 1919 he was united in marriage with Audrey Smith.  The family lived in Jefferson where Mr. Gilroy was a truck driver for an auto reansport carrier company.  He wa emplyed by the city of Jefferson on the police force for many years.  Later he worked for the State of Iowa  and then the American Athletic Company.  He was a member of the Central Christian Church, belonged to Jefferson Barracks No. 1838 of World War I Veterans and Floyd Brown Post No. 11 of the American Legion,  He was a member and pst master of Morning Star Lodge No. 159 A.F. & A.M and belonged to Green Lodge No. 315 of I.O.O.F.

5.  VERA³ GILROY (WILLIAM VICTOR², GEORGE W.¹) was born 1893 in Iowa.  She married HOWARD W. GATES.  He was born 05 Feb 1887 in Fairbury, Jefferson co.,Nebraska, and died 1942 in West Plains, MO. His parents were, John David Gates and Hattie Wirt.

6.  WILLIAM GEORGE JR.⁴ GILROY (WILLIAM GEORGE³, WILLIAM VICTOR², GEORGE W.¹) was born 1920 in Iowa, and died 1967.  He married VADA KING 24 Feb 1941.  She was born 13 Jun 1922 in Rippey, Iowa, and died 04 Jul 2005 in Jefferson, Iowa.

 

Notes for VADA KING:

Vada Lorraine King Gilroy, daughter of Jim King and Mary Sanders King was born June 13, 1922 in Rippey, Iowa and died July 4, 2005 at the Greene county Medical Center in Jefferson at the age of 83 years and 21 days.  Vada grew up in Rippey where she attended school and graduated with the class of 1940.  Vada worked for a time at Sabas Restaurant(Bakery?) in Jefferson.  On February 24, 1941 she was united in marriage to William George Gilroy, Jr.  They made their home in Jefferson until moving to Rippey in 1944.  Vada and Bill were the parents of three children, Larry, Bob, and Barb.  Vada stayed busy as an Avon representative in the Rippey area.  IN 1970, Vada went to work as a dispatcher at the Greene County Sheriff's Department, returning to Jefferson to make her home in 1971.  She retired from the sheriff's department in 1988.  Vada most enjoyed spending time with her family and all of their activities.  She also loved to read and cook, as well as being a sports fan.  She was a member of the Rippey United Methodist Church, the Rebekah Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star.  Vada was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bill in 1967; and her brother, Howard King.  She is survived by her sons, Larry Gilroy and his wife Janet of Casa Grande, Arizona and Bob Gilroy and his wife Lori of Perry; her daughter, Barb Reese and her husband Kage of Ft. Worth, Texas; four grandchildren, Amy Price and her husband Jason of Ogden, Billy Reese of Omaha, NE, Troy Gilroy and his wife Amy of Des Moines and Tommy Reese of Ft. Worth Texas; four great-grandchildren, Chelsea and Blake Price of Ogden and Riley and Kolby Gilroy of Des Moines; one brother, Carl King of Rippey; one sister Wanda Kinney of Perry; brother-in-law Merle Gilroy and his wife Juanita of Jefferson.

7.  VICTOR CHARLES⁴ GILROY (WILLIAM GEORGE³, WILLIAM VICTOR², GEORGE W.¹) was born 29 Jun 1922 in Des Moines, IA, and died 15 Jul 1996 in Perry, IA, At Rowley Memorial Home.  He married SHIRLEY ELOISE FINK 09 Dec 1940 in Rockwell City, IA.  Shewas born 31 MAY 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa and died 02 Nov 1994 in Perry, IA.

 

Notes for VICTOR CHARLES GILROY:

Worked at the Five-Spot cafe and Gordon cafe in Jefferson.  Joined US Navy August 02, 1942 and served 3 years as a cook and baker. After service he worked in grocery stores, United foods,Safeway, and Fareway.  In the 1960 they owned and operated a cafe in Eagle Grove. They retired and lived in Augusta, Georgia until Shirley's health failed and they moved back to Perry.
